Möglicherweise wird ein Canon Sensor den Weg in eine mögliche Leica M9 finden. Dies berichtet zumindestens die Seite canonrumors. Demnach könnte der Sensor der Canon 5D Mark II in veränderter Form in der Leica M9 Platz finden.

Ab dem 2 Juni wird für die 5D Mark II eine neue Firmware zur Verfügung stehen.
Während dem Aufzeichnen von Filmen, kann nun auch die Belichtungszeit, Blende und Empfindlichkeit geändert werden.

LONDON, UK, 27th May 2009: Canon announced today it will release a firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark II allowing users to manually control exposure when shooting video.  The new firmware will be available for download from 2 June 2009 on Canon Europe’s support web site.
Following the launch of the EOS 5D Mark II in September 2008, Canon’s Research and Development team has listened closely to customer feedback to develop additions to the camera’s movie recording functionality.

Allowing EOS 5D Mark II owners to achieve even more stunning video results with the camera, the firmware update will include the following manual controls when shooting video:

• Full aperture selection
• ISO speed: Auto, 100 – 6400 and H1
• Shutter speed: 1/30th – 1/4000th second

The EOS 5D Mark II integrates full HD movie capability into a high-end 21.1 Megapixel camera; opening a multitude of new possibilities for photojournalists and news photographers.   Since its launch the camera has proved its appeal to professionals working in diverse fields, from studio and wedding to nature and travel.  Now, following customer feedback, Canon has improved functionality for professional video users, further unleashing the potential of the EOS 5D Mark II for cinematographers and photographers alike.

Canon veröffentlichte gestern eine neue Firmware (Version 1.0.7) für die 5D Mark II. Diese behebt das Black-Dot -und das Vertical Banding Problem (tauchte beim sRaw Format in dunklen Bildbereichen auf).

Im Internet tauchen immer mehr Fälle des “Black Dots” Problems auf. Anscheinend werden bei einer bestimmten Einstellung und Lichtsituation schwarze Punkte ins Bild angezeigt ohne das diese wirklich dahin gehören. Ein Beispiel dieses Problemes gibt es unter engadget.com. Zusätzlich zu den Black Dot Problems ist die 5D Mark II wohl auch von Vertical Banding betroffen (D200 User wissen wovon ich spreche).

Canon hat sich schon zu diesen Problemem geäußerst und verspricht diese zu beheben bzw. abzumildern.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera have identified two types of image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
2. Vertical banding noise

We are currently investigating and analysing the causes, and examining measures to reduce or eliminate these phenomena by providing correction firmware. An announcement will be made on www.canon-europe.com as soon as measures have been determined.

Details of the phenomena and shooting conditions under which they are likely to occur are as follows.

1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
When shooting night scenes, the right side of point light sources (such as lights from building windows) may become black. The phenomenon may become visible if the images are enlarged to 100% or above on a monitor or if extremely large prints of the images are made.

2. Vertical banding noise
If the recording format is set to sRAW1, vertical banding noise may become visible depending on the camera settings, subject, and background.
▪ Vertical banding noise is not noticeable if the recording format is set to sRAW2.
▪ Vertical banding noise does not occur if the recording format is set to RAW or JPEG.
▪ Noise can be reduced if C.Fn II-3: Highlight tone priority is set to 0: Disable.

Canon apologizes for any inconvenience caused and thanks photographers for their patience.

Auf vimeo.com gibt es ein weiteres sehr gut gemachtes Video welches mit Canons neuer 5D Mark II entstanden ist. Interessant dürfte die Verwendung der Objektive sein. Neben einem Zeiss/Contax 85mm f1.4 wurden auch diverse Nikon Objektive wie ein Nikon AF-D 16mm f2.8 Fisheye oder ein Nikon AF-S 17-35 f2.8 verwendet.

So wie es scheint ist die Canon 5D Mark II bereits in China erhältlich. Auf Canonrumors.com gibt es entsprechende hinweise hinzu. Des weiteren soll die Canon 5D Mark II ab heute auch in den Niederlanden erhältlich sein.
